Athletes vs. Doctor's Pay
Athletes are the sports stars we all dream to be whether it's in Baseball, Football, or any other professional sport; paid millions of dollars a year to entertain the public. Doctors are medical professionals that save lives, file patient information, and prescribe medication to those who are sick, in pain, or have other problems; most make under $500,000. Since the early days of Baseball athletes have started making more and more, players in the 1910's made $80 a game. The wage difference is staggering and shows where our interests lie as American citizens. Rather than boosting men and women who save countless lives, we instead dump millions upon millions into the salaries of athletes such as Tiger Woods, Lebron James, and Peyton Manning. However, those athletes don't even make the most, Tiger Woods the highest earner out of the three is only third out of the top 50. Who may you ask is the highest paid? It is someone most people would guess or even know of. It is Floyd Mayweather Jr. who made a staggering $85,000,000 in a single year from boxing matches. To say this in other words, most people in the United States never make even close $85,000,000 in their lifetimes, let alone in single year. Now what do athletes do with all this money? Most have charities they have started and or donated to over the years to help causes from scholarships to helping children in Africa get a better education. On the other hand, we all have heard the stories of athletes going out and buying quarter of a million dollar cars or watches made out of gold. Vince Young a NFL Rose Bowl MVP has done some not so wise things with his money "...spending $5,000 per week at the Cheesecake Factory and purchasing 120 of 130 seats on a commercial airline flight in 2007."

How can we fix this problem of excessive payment and spending? One solution maybe to lower the taxes and fees athletes must pay to play in order to lower their wages. If they don't have to pay so much in fees and taxes then, they don't require as much money to pay for them, and therefore need less money to live on. Another option is that doctors who prove that they are qualified as extraordinary doctors can be paid additional money that will help them further their careers. But, doctors have taxes and other expenses that must be paid for out of their pockets. Anesthesiologists for example must pay for liability insurance that protects them if something goes wrong in an operation. Plans could be available to physicians that could lessen their payments on these insurances. If these plans go into actions we could possibly see a major decrease in athletes' pay so that everyone gets paid fairly for the amount they contribute to society.

ReplyDeleteI think its interesting that athletes make more money than doctors who save lives. That really doesn't seem fair to me.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you peter this is a serious problem considering they are payed in one game which could be under hour they can be payed as much as most doctor let alone most americans make in a year and in that hour they are running around having fun while doctors are saving peoples lives. This is absurd if we think of the wealthiest people not considering people who are famous from sports movies or a big company like bill gates we think of doctors and lawyers but primarily doctors and to consider that in one game that can last less than an hour athletes are being payed more than doctors are being payed in one year.
ReplyDeleteYour blog was really interesting to read. I agree with you that these doctors are saving lives while these athletes are just entertaining people. It's bad to think that we would spend that kind of money paying an athlete for being good at a sport more then a doctor who is helping the sick.
ReplyDelete$85,000, 000???? Are you kidding me? For beating people up? ....ok, I know it's a sanctioned sport. I have to disagree to your first solution to outrageous athletic salaries because other people that make large sums of money still have to pay income taxes. Don't you think that they only way for this to change is if people start to boycott athletic events?
ReplyDeleteGood job Peter. This is a big problem but sadly, very few know about it, you were very informative in this blog which seems hard to do since there is very little information on this.
ReplyDeleteEverything you said is absolutely correct. As a future doctor, I want to get money for my hard work. Getting thousands of dollars a game to use steroids and not even play well is ridiculous. Doctors save lives and should be properly rewarded for the great work they do. I like what you wrote about Vince Young at the end.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with everything that you say. Living in a free country, people have the right to decide where they spend their money.
ReplyDeleteYour content is very good and informative. I had never known some of the information you included!! Do you think there will be a change in the future about this topic?
ReplyDeleteI have always felt this way about the military. They should be making what athletes make because they are the reason those athletes are making their salaries.
ReplyDeleteAmerican MDs are the most dangerous, highest paid and commit the most fraud. Foreign MDs come to the US in droves to cash in. 1.5 MILLION Americans go outside the US for healthcare.

Doctor Salaries The Truth
With all the medical fraud doctors make more than the average athlete and besides, athletes have short caress and they don't harm people.
